Studio Update!

Evening all!

I felt as though I should write up a post with plenty of pictures about the work I've been making in the studio over the last few months. I realise I haven't made a post about my work for a long time, but since I started my final year, I've been through some really challenging times, both in the development of my work and in my personal life. Coming to terms with both has been really difficult, and I'm still working through the personal stuff, but I've never been more confident with my art practice and my subject matter!

So, my subject matter, is sex, desire, and the flesh-on-flesh of body contact. I am also interested in my touch, as the artist handling materials, leaving my 'mark' whether it be in a drawn line, brush mark, or physical imprints from my hands. In my paintings and sculpture is the presence of my 'mark', which for me goes hand in hand with the subject of the sexual body.
I've developed a process to make a painting, I make drawings from images and imagination, then making paintings from a selection that I feel compositionally will work best. I have also found the right 'recipe' for painting medium and the consistency I need to be able to work quickly to get the fluidity of the line.

Here are some pictures of a few of the works I've made over the last couple of months.

I really feel as though I've developed my artistic 'voice', my style that could become recognisable to people. My paintings are quick, expressive marks and I make many with only a few turning out to be successful. My ceramics have also gone through a development, from my phallocentric, unfired pieces. I wanted these new ceramic works to seem as though they are wrestling more with themselves, and the glazed surfaces to be something that draws the viewer in.

One thing I have really been trying to work out is how to title my works, where I get inspiration. I've been thinking of using quotes from songs or books that I was reading or found interesting at the time of making the work.

Now it's full steam ahead and making more and more drawings to paint over my Easter break, I want 4 paintings for the degree show, so I know I will need to make loads more then needed and select the ones that work best.

I'm excited for the degree show! I'll be posting a lot in the build up to it :)
