This morning's seminar, featuring Me.

Evening all,

I thought I'd write a post about how my seminar went this morning. There weren't many people or tutors as interviews were taking place, which was a shame, but the people who did attend created a lively discussion which was really helpful. With any discussion about my work I always come away feeling fuzzy headed and mentally drained, so excuse me if my writing isn't very coherent.
Here are a few photos of my work set up...

The general opinion was that the scrap wood structure was the most successful of the three 'contexts' I presented. There were a few comments about its ability to present a space and create more questions for the viewer as it is less familiar than the more interior based set up and the plinth.
Another comment came regarding my methods of handing the clay to create the figurines; the 'grabbed' white clay is considered a current 'trendy' way to create ambiguous forms. I can see why this was said, with the recent sculpture show at the Saatchi gallery, work by Rebecca Warren is brought to mind. However, it was also noticed that my method was a natural progression from the paintings I made last year.
With any small clusters of objects displayed, the themes of shrines and religious iconography was raised, I wasn't surprised and it's an aesthetic that I am drawn to, I am interested in pushing the idea to the extreme and exploring collecting obsessions, fanatics and worship.

Another discussion was the difficulty one may have in trying to convey an atmosphere through sculpture, I explained to everyone my interests were to do with interiors and their potential to retain atmosphere and my current work was compared to the paintings I presented last year, which are said to be more successful in portraying the atmospheric quality I strive for.
So what's my next move? I think it will be interesting to remove myself from this subject by another degree, and I'll do this by making paintings of these set-ups. I think this will help me decide how to approach my subject from here.
Overall I think the response to my work was helpful, and once I process all the comments and ideas in my head I think my direction will become clearer.

Thanks for reading! Xx
