Installing My Degree Show - Part 1

Untitled

It's been 4 days of intense labour; filling holes, sanding walls, painting spaces white. This can only mean one thing... the transition of the Slade from comforting studios to kick-ass exhibition spaces is well underway.

*Cue dramatic opening sequence music similar to that of a crime thriller*

Yes, the installation deadline is looming, tensions are running high and final year students' nerves are fraying at the thought of making curatorial decisions and dealing with the fear of potentially hanging work wonky by mistake.

I'm exaggerating slightly. The atmosphere in the Slade is actually pretty supportive and optimistic. We are all working really bloody hard to make our show spaces look good, already most of the rooms are painting their floors with the standard 'don't take any notice of me' shade of grey. Yet another layer of graduating students' paint on the walls and floors, the final marks we will leave on the building before we depart...

All nostalgic notions aside, I have some pictures I have taken over the last few days as me and Ayesha Singh turn our show space into a naturally-lit white domed haven.

Putting my trusty iPhone's 'panoramic' camera feature to good use, here is the 'Round Room', our show space. The walls are finished and Ayesha's structure is built and secured, it commands a wonderful presence in this space. I've begun placing my work to try and get an idea of where each piece will go.

She's a beauty! We are unable to paint the floors or start hanging work, as Ayesha's structure is going to be plastered tomorrow. Once that is done, part 2 of our installation can commence; the floor will be painted grey and my work will take its place in the room.

In the mean time, my postcards arrived for the show!

The tutors are back after the Bank Holiday, so discussions and ironing out any issues will be on the agenda. This time next week it will all be done and examinations will be underway.

Wish me luck for the rest of the installation, I'm keeping everything crossed that it all runs smoothly!
