'I Love Dick' - Chris Kraus

Some quotes from the book 'I Love Dick' by Chris Kraus that jumped out at me and sparked my brain cogs...
I thought I'd try something new and start blogging quotes from the books I read, quotes that I find intriguing, or strike a chord in my head.

I Love Dick

'This presumes that there's something inherently grotesque, unspeakable, about femaleness, desire.' (pg 138)

'(Is there a place in this to talk about how wet I've been, constantly, since talking on the phone to you 8 days ago? Talking, writing, teaching, working out and dealing with this house, this part of me is melting & unfolding.)' (pg 138)

'But I was nervous too, like walking through a script you know's already been written except the outcome's been withheld.' (pg 145)

'Dear Dick, I want to make the world more interesting than my problems. Therefore, I have to make my problems social.' (pg 196)

'If women have failed to make 'universal' art because we're trapped within the 'personal', why not universalize the 'personal' and make it the subject of our art?' (pg 211)

'Female monsters take things as personally as they really are. They study facts. Even if rejection makes them feel like the girl who's not invited to the party, they have to understand the reason why.' (pg 218)

'I aim to be a female monster too.' (pg 218)

That last quote is my favourite. Kraus is a fantastic writer, she puts essays and social comment into a supposedly fictional narrative, which I find to be really interesting and it actually heightens the intensity of the fixation on the character of 'Dick'. I'd be really interested in reading some more of her stuff.
